Africa Comes to Life






2006 (Phase I):
African elephants Genny C. and Lilac move into their home in the A Step Into Africa Exhibit. The new elephant yard measures approximately 23,000 square feet. The indoor barn is an approximately 11,000-square-foot facility with a 1,000-square-foot visitor viewing area.







2008 (Phase II):
A Splash Pool was added to Genny C. and Lilac's home. The Zoo also opened a brand new Baboon Exhibit during this time, too.








2011:
The Zoo Society receives $1 million from the Riedman Foundation during the groundbreaking for Phase III of A Step Into Africa in April of 2011.








2012 (Phase III):
The final phase of A Step Into Africa is completed and opened to the public in May of 2012. This state-of-the-art exhibit includes three African lions, a Maasai Village, a double-decker Safari Bus and a Dig Zone.
