Listed as Near Threatened; CITES: Appendix I by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Threats to this animal are: trapping for food and for their gizzard stone which is used in jewelry and for the illegal pet trade. This bird's available nesting habitat of offshore islands is decreasing due to plantation logging, construction activity and pollution by nearby industries.
The Nicobar pigeon is found in Southeast Asia, from India eastward, on the Nicobar Islands to New Guinea, and in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. They prefer mangroves and lowland forests.
Hard seeds, grains, berries and small invertebrates.
