Education Internships

All internships are unpaid, but can count towards educational credit. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and are offered four times each year. Fall (September to November); Winter (December to February); Spring (March to May); Summer (June to August).

Interns will learn about and help to implement projects in the following areas:

Education Programs: Develop curriculum, prepare materials for classes for young people, ZooTeens, ZooMobile, camps, scout programs, and others.

Educational Materials: Research and write curriculum; prepare graphics, develop activities for Pre-K through 4th grade students and their teachers.

Interpretive Programs: Help care for animals in stage show; support interpreter/keeper presentations; help prepare for special programs and animal days.

Exhibit Interpretives: Provide content and graphic research and draft copy for labels; support the development and improvements to hands-on interactives.

Visitor Studies and Exhibit Evaluations: Research/benchmark outstanding programs at other zoos and free-choice learning institutions; conduct visitor surveys of exhibits; document visitor attitudes, learning and experiences in support of renovations to polar bear, penguin, sea lion etc. exhibits; conduct evaluations of interpreter demos.

Requirements

You must be at least a junior in high school and willing to work a minimum of eight hours per week. All internships will include a final project and presentation to Zoo staff. Projects depend on the area of your internship and the length of your internship and will be designed by the intern and Zoo staff to make sure they are useful for all parties involved.

  • Cover letter indicating: The time time of year you are looking to participate, the number of hours you must fulfill and what you hope to learn from your experience at the Zoo.
