Saturday, September 19 is International Red Panda Day and we’re celebrating all week leading up to it! Come visit red panda Starlight at the Zoo – red attire is encouraged! Follow us on social media for special red panda content. [Note due to safety precautions, we will not have scheduled live events at the Zoo but there will be periodic enrichment/feeding sessions with the red panda and keepers that you may catch on your visit!].
Try your hand at ‘Red Panda Bingo‘ by seeing if you can fill in enough squares to spell ‘Panda’ by entering an animal at Seneca Park Zoo that shares the given characteristic with red pandas.
Did you know?
The global red panda population has declined by 50% over the last 20 years and there may be as few as 2,500 remaining in the wild. As is the case with many animals, habitat loss is the number one threat to the red panda. Factors like deforestation, unsustainable local herding practices and scarcity of bamboo, which is 98% of their diet, are all of great concern.
Support Red Panda Conservation
Check out the Red Panda Network‘s website to learn more about this species, what’s currently being done to protect them and what you can do to help! On Monday, September 14 at 5 p.m., join us for a ZOOM conversation with Terrance Fleming of the Red Panda Network to learn about conservation efforts for the species. Register for the ZOOM event here.
We will also be collecting donations for red panda focused conservation all week. Donors will be entered to win a drawing for a painting by Starlight for every $5 donation they make. Thank you for helping save red pandas from extinction!
Are You a Fan of Red Pandas? Become a Red Panda Ranger!
Kids that love red pandas and want to get involved in their conservation should pursue becoming a Red Panda Ranger. As a Red Panda Ranger it’s up to you to learn about red pandas and then spread the word about them to people you know.
There are 5 levels to being a Red Panda Ranger and once you complete them you will receive a certificate from them so start climbing the ranks today! Take a photo of yourself with your certificate and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org to be entered to win a painting by red panda Starlight!
