The award is named after Dara, a Bornean orangutan born at Seneca Park Zoo fourteen years ago, currently residing at the Virginia Zoo.

Director of Animal Health and Conservation Dr. Jeff Wyatt will join Dr. Saada next month in Sukadana, Borneo, where both will be working with the Zoo’s “One Health Initiative.”

This month, Dr. Wyatt and Dr. Nick Aloisio, the first physician awarded the Dara Scholarship in 2013, made a presentation about the Zoo’s work with Health in Harmony. Together with this conservation organization, we build capacity and mentor health care for villagers, goats and cattle, ultimately saving rainforest and lives.

The Zoo’s “One Health Initiative” is reflected in many programs demonstrating the interconnection between human, wildlife and environmental health, be it saving sturgeon in the Genesee River or orangutans in Borneo.

One Health TRIAD

Both Drs. Saada and Wyatt be blogging from Borneo throughout April as they promote Rochester’s One Health – One Medicine initiative, saving orangutans from extinction. Stay tuned for updates!
