Birthday Party Host, Part-Time

JOB SUMMARY

The Birthday Party Host facilitates positive guest experiences during birthday parties at the Zoo. Birthday Party Hosts will serve food, facilitate crafts and games, and share information about the Zoo to groups of up to sixty people while creating and maintaining a safe, fun, and engaging atmosphere.

DUTIES

  • Maintain a positive demeanor while interacting with guests of all ages.
  • Work together on a team, communicate clearly, and complete written reflections.
  • Be punctual, reliable, and professional.
  • Maintain customer satisfaction, problem solving when necessary.
  • Set up and tear down party room.
  • Serve food and facilitate crafts and games for party guests.
  • Assist coordinators with other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

This position requires walking, standing, speaking, hearing, interacting with the general public, children, visitors and staff. Lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting. Walking to various locations throughout the Seneca Park Zoo will require exposure to outdoor elements. Weekend availability is a must.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Experience Requirements

  • Passion for the mission of Seneca Park Zoo.
  • Experience with early childhood education, party or event hosting, or equivalent.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Comfortable communicating and facilitating activities with adults and their children.
  • Comfortable with calculating and collecting payments.
  • The employee is regularly required to lift or move up to 25 pounds.

Skills and Competencies Requirements

Demonstrates strong interpersonal, organization, customer service, and communication skills. Ability to work well with team members and switch tasks as required.

Educator, Part Time

Working Hours: Flexible hours and scheduling. 8 – 20 hours per week during Spring and Fall, 24-40 hours per week during Summer. Must be available on weekends and for occasional evening shifts.

JOB SUMMARY

Zoo Educators have a passion for environmental education and connecting audiences with wildlife and wild places. They facilitate a variety of programs including classes, expeditions, scout workshops, animal presentations, and camps to audiences of all ages. They are flexible to adapt to different programs and audiences and a changing schedule. Programs are scheduled throughout the week, on weekdays and weekends, and at various times, including morning, afternoon, and evening. There is also seasonal variability in programming, and educators should be prepared to transition to primarily working in ZooCamp or helping with ZooTeens during the summer months.

DUTIES

  • Learn and facilitate a growing repertoire of programs.
  • Lead programs either individually or as part of a team utilizing provided lesson plans. This may include set up before and clean up following the program.
  • Engage audiences of all ages, majority of programs are for youth between 18 months and 18 years old.
  • Handle and present ambassador animals following trained protocols.
  • Communicate feedback on programs and notify coordinators of any supply needs.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist coordinators with other duties, as assigned.

SUPERVISION

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Leading outdoor activities or programs and walking to various locations throughout Seneca Park Zoo will require exposure to outdoor elements, including a range of temperatures and a variety of weather conditions. Weekend availability is a must.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • BS degree in Education, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
  • Teaching certification preferred.
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver’s license.

Experience Requirements

  • Must have teaching experience working with a variety of ages, preferably in an informal setting.
  • Knowledgeable about best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Animal handling experience or ability to handle ambassador animals given training.
  • Possess excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to be a team player and easily collaborate with others.
  • Must be energetic, flexible, punctual, organized, and exhibit a professional demeanor.
