Get ready to explore and document the wild side of Rochester! From April 25th to April 28th, we’re calling on nature lovers, photographers, and citizen scientists of all ages to participate in the City Nature Challenge by taking photos of wild plants, animals, and fungi in our area.
Whether you’re in a park, your backyard, or along the Genesee River, every observation counts! Simply snap a photo of any wild species you find and upload it to the iNaturalist app to help contribute valuable data for conservation efforts.
The adventure continues! From April 29 to May 5, help identify the wild plants, animals, and fungi documented during Part 1 of the City Nature Challenge. Your photos have been uploaded—now it’s time to see what we’ve found!
Visit the Seneca Park Zoo Project Page on iNaturalist to compare observations, help with species identification, and contribute to this exciting community science effort. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or just curious about local wildlife, every ID helps refine our understanding of Rochester’s biodiversity.
1. Download the iNaturalist app on your phone and make an account.
2. Take photos of wild animals and plants in our area. Join the SPZ project on iNaturalist for more information about the event.
3. Upload the photos to iNaturalist (be sure the photos are geo-tagged and uploaded before April 28th!).
4. Help others in the community identify their photos & learn about new species as your finds get identified.
The goal of these Bioblitz’s is to document the variety of plant, animal, and fungal species that exist in and around the City of Rochester. We will hike through these parks and stop to document the organisms we find on the iNaturalist APP. Throughout the hike we will give you opportunities to go out and explore areas on your own to see what you are able find.

· In search bar type: City Nature Challenge 2025: Rochester, NY
o A project with the zoo logo should pop up.
· Select “JOIN” at the top of the page.
